PLUM Nights
International Film Unit
A Celebration of Identity
It may have been a chilly, quiet winter night in the middle of December, but the atmosphere in building six was anything bu t that. The halls were filled with the echoes of chatter and laughter of a continuous stream of students, the air filled with the aromatic fragrances of traditional german meals and traditional German music was playing on Loudspeaker. The warm and welcoming atmosphere coupled with the activity could only mean one thing: It was a PLUM Night. Specifically German PLUM Night.
Plum Nights is a weekly event taking place on the Dessau Campus every Sunday evening. It is an alternative, cultural event with the aim to promote cultural diversity and encourage interaction between international and German students. Organised by volunteer students from the DIA in collaboration with AG Kultur, the evening takes shape of an informal gathering where food is shared and movies discussed. These are the highlights of the evening. Every week Plum Nights focuses on a particular country from which interested students; together with Plum select a movie to be screened and prepare a simple menu of traditional food to be served during the night. The selected movies deal with politics, war, discrimination, history, youth, love, sexuality and a myriad of other topics, which help to portray current or past situations in different cultures and countries.
Excitement and Intrigue
Plum Usually showcases the rich culture of the host countries through Food, Clothing, music and other activities. In Past Plums, students have gone all out to organize stunning displays not only to celebrate their individual cultures, but also to sensitize their colleagues to the unique aspects of their culture.
One of the main draws of PLUM nights, aside from the food and culture, is the feature movie that is shown to the attendees. Movies selected for viewing may usually cover a wide variety of subjects, but always leave viewers entertained throughout the run-time. The most recently organized Plum, German Plum, was no different. The feature film selected was ‘Der Nachtmahr’, a German movie released in 2015 that blends elements of psychological thrills with coming-of-age drama. The Audience was kept on the edges of their seats throughout the screening.
In many ways German Plum was the perfect way to end the First half of the semester. Organized right before the Christmas break, it brought students together for one last fellowship, at least until the following year. Plum returns on 30th January.
