Project Info:

The proposal is an envelope of the second construction phase of Pinakothek der Moderne
The barrack house can be described as a housing combined with a longitudinal and corner volume, the building only aligns to the street line. Therefore, forming a square in the middle as a void (which is shown in diagram 01). Due to the different sizes of the housing , the “footprint changes” in which one is stepping forward and one steps backwards.
After the world war II, the barrack building was demolished in 1920. The new museum was constructed in a completely opposite situation, in which they are built within void instead of following the existing street-line.
Now, the relationship between building and void changes completely. The district on the site results similar to a “campus” with individual volumes instead of the new building that follows the old footprint of the barrack building.
The analysis of the old and new individual buildings achieved the puzzle concept for the following design.
Therefore, I started the puzzle concept with the following approach, by creating a single volume which can be mediated between the housing blocks of the opposite side of the street. By doing so, the volume relative in between the huge mass of the Pinakothek der Moderne and the housing block opposite is achieved.
Pinakothek der Moderne is a very massive building block on site and it destroys the urban fabric. Therefore, the proposed building is designed to suggest different individual volume, similar scale as the housing opposite the street.
Following that direction, the proposal repeats by applying partially the existing housing system, but in addition to that, also connects the individual volumes.
As a result, one may read it as a massive museum consisting various units of museums while at the same time, one may also read it as a single building block in connection to one another while offering different arrangement of atmosphere in every single block.
That defines the idea behind the puzzle.
