Project Info:
Wuppertal Sculpture Park is a beautiful park privately owned by Sculpture Artist, Tony Cragg. It lies above Wupper valley in the Christbusch woodland between the town centres of Elberfeld and Barmen. The fairy tale “Alice in Wonderland” is the inspiration behind this project. The way how Alice is living in her own dream is similar to how Tony Cragg is living in the dream of his sculpture park right now. Each of the sculptures is individually unique and beautiful in its own way just like the creatures Alice met in Wonderland. 3 pavilions which are strategically located in the park are proposed to compliment the existing sculptures. 3 of these pavilions (Wisdom Parlour, Tea-Party and Court of Hearts) will provide 3 different kinds of experience and atmosphere to the users. The idea of creating these 3 pavilions is actually to create a platform for the visitors to capture and appreciate the beauty of the existing sculptures. As the main idea of these pavilions is “framing the view of the sculpture”, thus each of the
pavilions has different openings which frame the view of each individual sculpture. Besides, the shape of the openings is derived from the shape of the sculpture itself. On the other hand, the shape of each pavilion is distinctively derived from the idea of stacking a few stones, which represents nature. The method of this application is inspired by the way Tony Cragg created his sculpture, Point of View by stacking ellipses together as one. The interesting organic form of the pavilions symbolizes some huge stones protruding from the landscapes. The linearity of the pavilions in terms of circulation creates a special journey and atmosphere to the visitors. Lastly, the skin of the pavilions which are made out of carbon fibre will form a translucent effect which will not overpower the existing sculptures and it gives a sense of lightness. The use of robotic arm will help to weave the carbon fibre in a systematic way.
