Interview with Pavilion HEX-316 team

Cadlogic - Digital Fabrication Summer Semester 2017

Introduction

As a custom at the Hochschule Anhalt, a pavilion designed by four students, Michelle C. C Yin, Chee C. Leong, Wan L. Pau and Xiao. Lee, was the innovative structure that exhibited 12 parametrically designed jewelry pieces during the 2017 year-end campus festival. This design was originally inspired by a sea urchin however, with the application of structure and workability its form was translated to the exhibited Hex-316 we now see. At the end of the semester, this became the winning pavilion due to being the most suitable design, meeting the requirements of a structure that could be easily assembled and disassembled and of economic materiality. Structure and Assembly

The parametric structure is made out of 316 hexagonal shaped cells with 3 different types of modules each serving a different function: structural, openings and exhibiting cells. The cells were generated with a biometric pattern by creating an internal and external faces. The porosity of the structure increases as it goes toward the cantilevered arc creating visual transparency at eye level and improving the structural stability of the cantilevered component.

The cells are built from 6mm thick corrugated cardboard. All the cells consist of two components – the facing and the framing. These cells were assigned with individual coding and printed as templates for the construction. The cardboards were cut, scored and folded accordingly to create these cells and then bolted together into 8 sections and assembled on site.
