Competition Brief & Context

The goal of the competition is to find the best designs for a temporary Summer Pavilion. proposals for an innovative temporary structure that can be build, which provides shelter, shade, and seating for a range of events on a square inside the campus across the famous Gropius Bauhaus Building of 1927.

Just as this icon of Modernism stands for technical innovation and avant-grade design within its own period, the competition wants to address and demonstrate the capacity of contemporary architecture, by encouraging the employment of form-making and digital fabrication methods to transform space in order to captivate the public imagination.

As for the size of the task, the Summer Pavilion is set into a max. volume of 4.00 x 6.00 x 3.00 meters  with a maximum height limitation of 3.00 m.

The competition winner will receive both a prize plus the offer to oversee the realization of the winning proposal on site, while the aim is to construct the Pavilion by the end of June 2014.

Fees

There are no registration fees.

Awards:

1st Prize: 500.- / 2nd Prize: 250.- / 3rd Prize: 100€

Jury Criteria 

Entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

1. Design Concepts for an imaginative transformation of space.

2. Demonstration of innovative techniques and ideas for the fabrication of the pavilion, including statements about materials and building techniques.

3. Fulfillment of Functional needs including:

a. providing a  seating / lounging area.

b. delineating a space to allow relaxation and dialogue.

c. creating an inviting area for assembly of groups and small lectures around the pavilion itself using new building methods.

4. The Pavilion must occupy no more than a virtual space of 6.00 m by 4.00 m by 3.00 m in height.
